about emily E-mail
emily2My intent and my intention are this; to live with the courage that the great Georgia O'Keefe said it takes "...to create one's own world in any of the arts..."
I offer my work to you in hopes that it will send a spark into your day and that wherever you spend your time you will be reminded that you are relevant, timely, passionate, and important.
I offer the creations at wordwisdomart.com to those who seek to be woven with ever more richness into relations with others, that the works offered here inspire all those who see it, own it, and share it to expand their hearts, to open their spirits, to have amid the wild, wonderful, succulent opportunites in every day and every interaction, courage.
Owner and Creative Director Emily Dakota Black has earned numerous awards for her art-to-wear clothing line. A seamstress since childhood, her passion for creating one-of-a-kind wearable art was first directed at formalwear for friends and private clients and later her work appeared in exclusive boutiques such as Chapter XIV in Saratoga Springs, NY. She also created classic day-to-evening wear for Body Talk in Avon, CT and her collection of wearable art necklaces were a part of The Canton Gallery on the Green’s Holiday Art Show in 2005. Described in the Farmington Valley Post as ‘one of a kind, exclusive fashion’ (April 18, 2002), Emily’s 'colorful designs of jewel-toned and Batik cottons mean you will be noticed!'

In the 1990's, she dared to use cotton for formalwear, incorporating quilting scraps and hand-dyed fabrics into her designs with the belief that common didn't mean boring, and now she offers WordWisdoms, a new line of inspired, mixed media altered art that includes mini- and full-sized messenger bags, wearable art necklaces, jewelry, wall art, and accessories for the home and office.

Her Series collage was first featured in Starbucks of Avon, CT (November 2007) and drew a great crowd. One fan said, “Its wonderful and fun and direct to the heart through the freedom to believe, create, and hope.” Another said, “Emily’s artwork gives the rest of us permission to be ourselves, to express who we really are- in our homes, in our communities, and in our souls.” The collages are a combination of Emily's writing and homage to the fabulous wild women who have walked their own paths of courage and inspired so many others to be true to themselves.

With the exception of the Tooth Fairy pillows, everything offered on wordwisdomart.com uses as much post-consumer and 'made in America' products in each piece as possible with the belief that art and inspiration surround all of us, every day, and that the old does not have to be forgotten; it can be honored and celebrated with flair!

Emily says, “Art, in all of it’s many facets, must be sustained.” In order to contribute to the art community, 5% of profits from every sale at wordwisdomart.com go to support One Red Bead, an organization created to support local artists in need of supplies for their work.
"At the lowest points in my life, when I was not able to create because I had no money, no spirit, or even a safe place to stay, I was sustained by other's creations. Everywhere, there is something of beauty that whispers 'you are not alone' because somehow, that artist was supported." Emily is dedicated to helping those artists who need it most. "We can't do it alone. Art is one way we weave ourselves together as community and as a family. Even if you don't 'do' art, you can support another person's 'courage-walk'. That is the vision and the mission of One Red Bead."
Every purchase on wordwisdomart.com means an artist can finish their project, can perhaps sell it and sustain themselves and their family. "Art is reciprocal- it keeps us in a big, wonderful circle," Emily says. "The artists that One Red Bead helps will offer their work on wordwisdomart.com, and 5% of their sales will to One Red Bead, and so the circle widens and continues." Look for the featured artist and their work on wordwisdomart.com. Get inspired, get involved, and get going on your own courage walk!
